Symbolically Oriented Art and Illustration

DC*Art Studio Statement

This is an art that revolves around consciousness which in this view, is its content. That is to say it is about thought, symbolic psychological constructs fabricated in time, which we often take to be objective facts. Thought tends to generate points of view, beliefs, ideals, imaginary worlds, associations, coherencies, contradictions, etc... Thought's very interesting but always limited. Through this artwork, I am attempting to re-present the observation of consciousness in visual symbolic terms, with a level of abstraction evocative of the mind's mystery. Working within the limitations of pictorial glyphs, I become compelled to re-interpret and visualize the activity of thought in imaginary and inventive ways. The making of the art itself becomes a kind of thought which plays with the vast spectrum of thought and life processes. Reality is processed into imaginary constructions; associations build between ideas; unexpected conjunctions occur; the processes of mind and life guide the artistic venture. I try to convey this with some intelligence, humor, conviviality, and spectacularness worthy of the subject. It is left for the viewer to work through the pictures with observation, thought, and imagination.

Some of the themes that tend to interest me are as follows:

* Glyphs - The irreducible units of meaning which thought clings to.

* Labyrinth - The networks and meshes of thought's associations.

* Relationship - The mirror in which one sees oneself. Division and association. Real or imagined?

* Symbol systems and the need to communicate meaning.

* Imaginary invention; Childlike spontaneity; Joy of play.

* Psychological evolution; Psychic quest; Movement of thought.

* Irrational aspects of the unconscious mind; Spontaneous conjunctions; "Accidents".

* Polarity as a force of Creation; Creation as an act of Division.

* Reflective Consciousness - Meta-level of mind perceiving itself. Observation of Structure of mind.

* Nature as Symbol - A pointer to a meta-level of Reality.

* Meditation - Absence of thought constructs active in time.

* The Fact that the true meaning of Life is always a mystery to thought.

The way I do digital art is of necessity related to other media I use; it is symbolic expression of the processes of consciousness. The exciting thing is that there is a quality to the process of making computer art which suggests alternatives unreachable in more traditional media. The digital method for me suggests metaphors for consciousness in the processes of recognition, repetition, and variation. The mind is forever repeating itself, playing the same games in different contexts, modifying its games, and building upon what it already knows to add depth and meaning to its existence. Digital processes seem to be especially suited to representing these particular aspects of mind. Additionally, the textural, expressive and spectacular possibilities inherent in digital imaging add conceptual and emotional charges to images different from other media. In making these images I make variations, exploring possibilities and spontaneous impulses, invoking order yet sometimes letting the image go where it wants to go.

I orient my work this way because it is very important to know oneself. To observe the movement of consciousness expands one's conception of what thought and reality really are, and what they are not. Seeing through the game is a vital first step towards knowing what it means to be a human being in this world. Perhaps the art will help a few people to grow and expand.
