Ink and watercolor, 16" x 19", 1994
The variations here are very close to each other in structure, but all different. The colors are placed in geometrical relationships to repeat regular rhythms. The title refers to the Well-Tempered Clavier by J.S. Bach, where similar strategies are used.

Gouache and watercolor, 14" x 19", 1994
Straight lines, high key colors, and the illusion of folded planes with shadows cast across them make up the variations here.

Acrylic, 26" x 36", 1994
The style here is one of flat color and overlapping planes, as in the paintings of Stuart Davis... but the variations of motif are very different from Davis's approach.
